Enabling passkeys on an Android device involves a few straightforward steps. Here's how you can do it:
Requirements
-
Android Version: Ensure your device is running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later.
-
Biometric Authentication: Enable a secure screen lock method such as fingerprint, facial recognition, PIN, or pattern.
Steps to activate Passkeys
- Initiate Passkey setup:
- Select the authentication option Passkey.
- Create your first Passkey and give it a name that you will use to recognize it for future signatures.
- Secure authentication:
-
- Authenticate using your device's screen lock method (e.g. fingerprint, facial recognition or PIN).
- Store the Passkey:
- The Passkey is stored in your default password manager. For Android versions 9-13, this is usually Google Password Manager. For Android 14 and above, you can choose a different provider such as 1Password.
- Configuring the Passkey provider (optional):
- To change the default Passkey provider on Android 14 or later, go to Settings > General Management > Passwords, Passkeys and Autofill and select your preferred password manager.
Further tips
-
- Cross-device compatibility: Passkeys are synchronised across all Android devices when you are signed in with the same Google account via Google Password Manager.
- Security benefits: Passkeys increase security by using public-key cryptography, which keeps your private key secure on your device.
